As Legal Counsel, you will join an established in-house legal team based in Antwerp and provide pragmatic, business-oriented legal advice across a broad range of commercial and maritime matters. The role has a strong focus on shipping activities, complex commercial contracts and dispute management in an international environment, working closely with both internal stakeholders and external advisers.

Job Description

  • Provide legal advice on a broad range of commercial law matters, including general contract law, shipping law and ship finance
  • Draft, review and negotiate complex commercial contracts, including charter parties
  • Manage and follow up maritime claims and related legal matters
  • Handle disputes and oversee litigation and arbitration in collaboration with external counsel in Belgium and abroad
  • Deliver clear, solution-oriented legal advice to support business objectives and mitigate legal risks globally
  • Act as a trusted legal business partner to internal departments and international group entities
  • Occasional international travel as part of the role

The Successful Applicant

  • Master's degree in Law
  • Additional qualification in maritime law and/or international study experience is an asset
  • At least 2 years of relevant experience in law firm and/or as in-house counsel
  • Solid and hands-on knowledge of commercial law; experience in shipping law and ship finance is a strong advantage
  • Fluent in Dutch and English, both written and spoken
  • Excellent contract drafting and negotiation skills
  • Accurate, detail-oriented and eager to learn
  • Strong legal-technical background combined with the ability to provide commercially relevant advice
  • Proactive, solution-driven and resilient mindset
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to translate complex legal matters for non-legal stakeholders
  • Dynamic, pragmatic and stress-resistant, able to work independently as well as in a team-oriented environment
